Hygge
Hygge - a rather buzzy word recently that you might’ve, or might not hav, heard of, is a Scandinavian and more specifically a Danish concept that you are both doing, and going to want to understand in detail, so you can create more of it in your life. Really, if you don’t know it already, you will love this concept!
Pronounced Hue-guh (say it gently) comes from the Danish root word for well being (similar to Aristos) !
Outside of Denmark, the concept is mostly known as a concept of creating a warm and cozy environment, often at home, to be enjoyed with a loved one. While this is absolutely in line with the concept of Hygge, it also so much more.
What is it?
In simple terms it is known as a concept of creating a favorable environment, that allows you to be present, enjoy life and the moment with loved ones, and, in context of today’s world… switch off.
While hygge, yes, is mostly thought of, and turned to, in the winter months - when we crave a cozy, cuddly environment — as a concept, it is actually adapted in summer, winter, at work, home, and/or in your day to day routine, and, it is definitely subjective.
Is it only for winter?
Signe, a Danish-German blogger, discusses this in her youtube video, which gives you a first hand look, as to what hygge means to a Dane. This video highlights that hygge can be very personal, moments or situations that might not be as favorable to others, and also can be a moment with your self (Signe highlights her skincare and self-care moments as one of her ways of creating hygge in her routine).
From a sport, to a hobby, to a warm picnic in the sun with friends, or lighting your favorite candle, hygge is a concept you are probably already incorporating in your life, but one that you also want to consciously create and incorporate more of into your week to week routine. It’s great for mental health, feeling good, spending time with loved ones, yourself, and enjoying life.
Another fun video that discusses the subjectiveness of the concept of hygge in Copenhagen.
